Students will receive a certificate of recognition after completing six core courses, attending a retreat, and working with a mentor.Old Testament surveys content and theology of the first 39 books of the Bible. Students are expected to read the Old Testament plus other assigned materials. New Testament is also a survey course that focuses on content and theology, along with assigned reading of the New Testament and other materials. Foundations of the Lutheran Faith (Confessions) uses the Book of Concord as its primary text, and covers the essential tenets of the Lutheran Church, including development and applicability to todays world. Ambassadors Call to Mission studies Luthers understanding of and teachings on Christian vocation. Students will examine their own gifts with the goal of discernment of those gifts for service. Two Electives provide opportunities to specialize in a ministry area as preparation for service in the congregation, the Virginia Synod, or ELCA. Areas of specialization may include youth, education, worship and music, stewardship, evangelism, social ministry, and administrationas well as other areas to be developed as the ACTS program evolves. Spiritual Growth Retreat takes an experiential approach to learning, with students and instructors interacting within a dynamic setting that may include group study, meditation, and prayer. Mentor Relationship provides for personal guidance of students by someone who is experienced in a leadership specialty area. The goal is to gain practical insights to supplement classroom learning. Continuing EducationACTS students are encouraged to continue learning and may enroll in additional classes after certification. Certificate renewal programs will also be offered. |
